Bush, Rumsfeld Signal Changes on Detainees

From the Associated Press:

The United States would rather have detainees at the Guantanamo Bay prison camp imprisoned by their home countries, Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld said Thursday.

Rumsfeld spoke a day after saying he was unaware of anyone in the Bush administration discussing closing the prison in Cuba. Hours later, President Bush refused to rule out shutting the facility, saying his administration was "exploring all alternatives" for detaining the prisoners.

So the Bush Administration wants to transfer the prisoners out of Gitmo and send them to prisons in their home countries. It makes beautiful sense. By moving the prisoners out of Gitmo, not only do you save on the costs of feeding and housing the prisoners, but you also save on the criticisms the Bush Administration has been receiving lately on the mistreatment of prisoners. No prisoners in Gitmo, no more allegations of American guards mistreating the Koran. No more comparing Gitmo to gulags. No more Amnesty International reports on human rights violations against the United States. No more legal challenges from the prisoner's defense lawyers on their criminal and civil rights. Oh, and who cares if the prisoners are going to be treated in even more inhumane conditions in their "home countries" own jails--their non-citizens anyways. They have no rights. And the best thing about this new policy is that it frees up more space at Gitmo for more new prisoners, allowing American intelligence officials to think up new ways to question and torture more new prisoners for more information. The prisoners at Gitmo have already been used up. Time to get rid of them.

I'd say we do have some similar tastes in blogs. I was checking out some of the different blogs on yours and Sylvia's sites--interesting personalities and viewpoints. Some of the viewpoints are much more refreshing than the political extremists screaming I hate *#&^$%!

So you're going back to grad school. Better get started as soon as possible. My own bachelors is in political science--very interesting political term paper you wrote! I would like to point out that had Queen Amidala--played by the hotness that is Natalie Portman--had not called for the vote of no confidence in the Senate, then the evil Palpatine would not have taken over the Republic, the Clone Wars would not have taken place, and Hayden Christian's Anakin would not have married the sizzling hot Natalie's Amidala. This could have given you an incredible opening into the Jedi Academy--possibly in the field of security services for protecting "Republican" senators of royal blood.

It is ironic that you're also looking into economics, political economy, or public policy. I've noticed that when you get a political science degree, you find that there's not a whole heck of a lot you can do with it--except go to grad or law school. We both probably need to move to Washington D.C. or Sacramento to utilize our specialized knowledge of political systems.

Either that, or join up with the extremists and scream bloody insults at each other!

We will certainly chat again at the meetup. Until then, take care.
