Another al Qaeda terrorist threat to attack the U.S.

This is an exclusive ABC News story:

WASHINGTON, Jan. 22, 2007 — Mimicking the hijackers who executed the Sept. 11 attacks, insurgents reportedly tied to al Qaeda in Iraq considered using student visas to slip terrorists into the United States to orchestrate a new attack on American soil.

Lt. Gen. Michael D. Maples, head of the Defense Intelligence Agency, recently testified that documents captured by coalition forces during a raid of a safe house believed to house Iraqi members of al Qaeda six months ago "revealed [AQI] was planning terrorist operations in the U.S."

Don't you just love this terror threat? American forces raid an al Qaida safe house six months ago and grab a bunch of documents. And it is only now, just one day before President Bush's State of the Union address, that the government is revealing to the American people of this potential al Qaeda threat. But it gets better here. Continuing with the ABC story:

At the time, Maples offered little additional insight into the possible terror plot. ABC News, however, has learned new details of what remains a classified incident that has been dealt with at the highest levels of government.

The government can't even reveal the details of this possible terrorist plot. But it is a terrorist plot, that we have to reveal just before the president's SOTU speech--can't let those evil al Qaeda terrorists take over Iraq. We've got to surge the troops! We've got to escalate the war! We've got to save Bush's presidential legacy!

As for the details that ABC News has learned of the plot, it was pretty much the same plan that al Qaeda used to smuggle the 9/11 terrorists into the U.S. through student visas. In this case, al Qaeda wanted to smuggle "10 and 20 suspects" into the U.S., although there is no details as to what targets these suspects would attack. It actually doesn't surprise me that al Qaeda would be trying to reformulate a plan, based on their successful 9/11 attack. And it doesn't surprise me that such plans were found in this U.S. raid on the al Qaeda safe house six months ago. What surprises me is that the Bush administration knew of this al Qaeda terror plot for six months, and they are only know publicly revealing it as a means of scaring the American people in order to support Bush's troop surge plan—to support the escalation of the Iraq war. You can bet that President Bush will use this story in his SOTU speech for that sole reason.

Disgusting.
