Bush Weighs Deploying Guard to U.S. Border

I don't like this. From Yahoo News:

WASHINGTON - Once again the Bush administration is turning to the military to help solve a domestic problem. But instead of hurricane aid or preparations to cope with avian flu, the Pentagon is being asked to possibly provide thousands of National Guard troops to shore up the U.S. border with Mexico, as part of President Bush's effort to gather support for an overhaul of the nation's immigration laws.

According to senior administration officials, Bush is considering plans to use federal funds to pay for National Guard troops deployed along the southern border.

One defense official said military leaders believe the number of troops required could range from 3,500 to perhaps 10,000, depending on the final plan. Another administration official cautioned that the 10,000 figure was too high.

The officials insisted on anonymity since no decision has been announced.

The president was expected to reveal his plans in an address Monday at 8 p.m. EDT. It will be the first time he has used the Oval Office for a domestic policy speech--a gesture intended to underscore the importance he places on the divisive immigration issue.

The key questions Friday were exactly how many National Guard troops might be deployed, for how long and at what cost to federal taxpayers--as well as the problem of possible disruption of upcoming deployments to
Iraq and elsewhere overseas.

This is frickin' insane! So what are those guard troops going to do when they see the illegals crossing the border--shoot them?

National Guard troops were created for basically two reasons. First, they serve as an emergency backup force in case the country is under an attack. The National Guard is basically the equivalent of the old state militias. So when the country needs an emergency reserve of forces during times of war, the National Guard is ready to fill in that need. They are reserve forces trained to fight in a war.

But the National Guard also performs a secondary duty as well. As a state militia, they can also be called up by the governor of the state to perform various duties when the state is faced with an emergency or crisis. So when a state experiences an emergency, such as a national disaster, or civil insurrection, the state can call up National Guard forces to perform whatever labor tasks are needed to cope with this disaster. So when hurricanes strike the Gulf Coast states, the National Guard troops are usually the first on the scene to provide search and rescue, relief work, law enforcement, and transportation of emergency supplies into the region.

The problem here is that I don't see the National Guard as being equipped or trained to do border control. These troops were never trained to perform immigration or border control tasks--they were trained to fight a war, or perform emergency services. I certainly don't see illegal immigrants crossing the border as a part of a larger "war on immigration," nor do I see deploying these troops in response to an emergency crisis. We've had this border control problem with Mexico for decades, and only now is the president calling this issue an emergency? The second problem I have is that our National Guard forces have also been stretched thin with deployments of Guard troops into Iraq and Afghanistan. And now we're told that we may have to deploy 10,000 Guard forces to the Mexican border? How about taking the money we're going to spend having these Guard troops sitting on the border, and instead spend it hiring and training new border control agents? Third, I don't like the idea of militarizing our southern border with Mexico--feels too "Stalinistic" for a country that likes to present itself as a beacon of liberty and freedom. Having U.S. National Guard troops guarding the Mexican border reminds me of the East German army guarding their border along West Germany and Berlin--so when are we going to start placing guard towers with machine guns, mines, and barbed wire along the border? Fourth, you start placing 10,000 National Guard forces on the border with Mexico, how do you think Mexico is going to respond? Do you think Mexico is going to start bringing their military forces up to the border to watch our military forces?

There is a way to solve this problem with illegal immigration, but it requires a multi-policy approach to the issue. To solve this immigration problem requires both reducing the demand for cheap, illegal immigration labor by American companies, and stopping the supply of illegal immigrants by controlling the borders. To reduce the demand for cheap, illegal immigration labor requires the federal government to crack down on companies that hire illegal immigrants in industries such as agriculture, construction, food processing, retail, and hospitality. It requires the federal government to pass both strong immigration labor laws, with strong penalties, and to enforce those immigration laws against companies that violate them. The Bush administration refuses to undertake any task that will reduce the demand for illegal immigration, or harm corporate and business interests. The second approach is certainly to control the border, of which the Bush administration enthusiastically supports. However to control the border, the U.S. needs to take a long term approach in funding and expanding its border control office. The U.S. needs to hire and train more border control agents. What we're getting from the Bush administration is this "feel good" dirty fix of placing military forces on the border. This will not solve the border control problem. Finally, the federal government needs to develop a comprehensive program of amnesty and citizenship for those long-term illegal immigrants already living in the U.S. The immigrants who have resided here in the U.S. for years, have pretty much assimilated themselves into American society. We need to complete the assimilation by developing a program to convert their illegal status to a legal status of residency. This will both allow them to become responsible members of society, and it may help reduce the demand of cheap illegal immigrant labor that American companies would love to exploit.

One final thought on this militarization of the border. Not only is the Bush administration's lame idea of deploying military forces on the US-Mexican border both a "feel good" and quick-and-dirty fix to a complex immigration problem, but it is also a political solution to a policy problem. By deploying National Guard troops on the Mexican border, Bush can then go to his neoconservatives and hard-lined Republicans to claim he's doing something to stop both the flow of illegal immigration into this country, but also to stop the influx of Hispanic and Mexican culture into American cultural society. I mean--we don't want no stinkin' multiculturalism, or illegal Mexicans to degrade the good values of our White Anglo-Saxon Protestant, American culture. Why, The Star Spangled Banner should be sung in English--NOT Spanish! I know this is a racist message, but it is a racist message that appeals to the neo-Nazis, Klu Klux Klan, and other right wing-nut wacko extremists that exist on the extremist wing of the Republican Party. And it is pretty much these extremists that are joining The Minutemen, who are taking up their own vigilante border control positions. These are the folks that will listen to and support Bush's extremist political policy. And if President Bush can get these Guard troops down to the border, he can use this as an election year issue to try to rally the hard-liners to vote Republican during the midterm elections, and to prop up his own falling poll ratings. So this proposal is really designed to address a political issue--not the issue of immigration--during an election year.

Once again, the Bush administration places politics before policy.

Thousands Flee Rumbling Indonesia Volcano

Molten lava slides down the side of Indonesia's Mount Merapi. The alert status of the volcano has been upgraded to its highest level, an official said, meaning some 34,000 people living in its danger zone face mandatory evacuation.(AFP/Bay Ismoyo)

This is incredible. From Yahoo News:

YOGYAKARTA, Indonesia - Indonesia ordered the immediate evacuation Saturday of thousands of people from the slopes of Mount Merapi volcano, warning of an imminent eruption as the mountain oozed fiery lava and belched clouds of black ash.

Hundreds of women, children and elderly were taken in buses and trucks to relocation centers set up at local schools and government buildings.

Indonesian Vice President Jusuf Kalla, right, talks with refugees at an evacuation place at Purwobinangun Pakem village in Yogyakarta, central Java, Thursday, May 11, 2006. Although the level of volcanic activity measured by scientists has remained at level 3, the second highest level, the volcano has been spewing huge clouds of gasses and ash, and a giant lava dome has formed on the southern side of the crater. (AP Photo)

Authorities put the region on highest alert after they observed two days of steady lava flow from the 9,700-foot peak on the island of Java.

"Because there have been constant lava flows that cause hot gases, we have raised the status to the highest level," said Bambang Dwiyanto, head of the region's volcanology center.

Many people had been evacuated from homes closest to the crater prior to Saturday, but thousands who live further down the fertile slopes refused to leave behind precious livestock and crops. Officials have said as many as 7,000 people still needed to go.

On Saturday, experts recorded 27 volcanic tremors as burning lava oozed from the crater and reached nearly a mile down its slopes, said Dr. Ratdomo Purbo, who heads an observation post at Merapi. He said the mountain, about 250 miles southeast of Indonesia's capital, Jakarta, had spewed hot ash clouds at least 14 times on Saturday.

I don't think I've ever seen a volcanic eruption where actual lava was spilling out from a perfectly-shaped cone. Incredible.

Three Challenge Harris in Fla. Primary

President Bush, right, talks with Rep. Katherine Harris, R-Fla., left, as Rep. Adam H. Putman, R-Fla., looks on during his arrival at MacDill Air Force Base, Tuesday, May 9, 2006 in Tampa, Fla. Bush's Florida travels put him smack in the middle of a political brouhaha involving his brother and the woman who helped the president win the White House. Florida Gov. Jeb Bush said Monday that Rep. Katherine Harris, R-Fla., can't win her campaign to unseat Democratic Sen. Bill Nelson. (AP Photo/Pablo Martinez Monsivais)

Now this is interesting. From Yahoo News:

TAMPA, Fla. - Three relatively unknown candidates qualified Friday to challenge U.S. Rep. Katherine Harris (news, bio, voting record) in the race to win Florida Republicans' nomination for U.S. Senate.

Gov. Jeb Bush and other Republican leaders have been looking for someone to take on Harris because she trails incumbent Democratic Sen. Bill Nelson (news, bio, voting record) by about 30 percentage points in public opinion polls. Bush said earlier this week that he didn't believe Harris could beat Nelson.

So the Bushies believe that Katherine Harris can't beat Bill Nelson for the Florida Senate seat. At first, the Republicans were trying to enlist Florida's House Speaker Allan Bense to run against Harris, however Bense refused. In fact, Governor Jeb Bush pleaded with Bense to run for the nomination.

So what do we get now? How about three unknown candidates running against Harris:

The new candidates are LeRoy Collins Jr., son of former Florida Gov. LeRoy Collins; Peter Monroe, a Pinellas County developer; and Windermere businessman William McBride.

Calls to the new candidates were not immediately returned Friday.

Harris would have preferred to have an uncontested primary but is confident she can win, campaign spokesman Chris Ingram said.

Now this is going to get interesting.

CIA Official's Home, Office Searched

This doesn't look good for Dusty Foggo. From Yahoo News:

WASHINGTON - Law enforcement officials executed search warrants Friday on the house and office of the CIA's outgoing executive director, theFBI said.

The agency's third ranking official, Kyle "Dusty" Foggo, has been under investigation by the FBI, IRS, Defense Criminal Investigative Service and the CIA's inspector general, said FBI spokeswoman April Langwell in San Diego.

Under a sealed warrant, officials searched Foggo's Virginia home and his office at the CIA's Langley, Va., campus, Langwell said. She could provide no other details.

The FBI and other agencies have been investigating whether Foggo improperly intervened in the award of contracts to a San Diego businessman and personal friend, Brent Wilkes, who has been implicated in a congressional bribery scandal.

In a statement, CIA spokeswoman Jennifer Millerwise Dyck also confirmed the searches of his home and office on Friday morning.

"The agency is cooperating fully with the Department of Justice and the FBI," she said. "Agency leaders outside of the (inspector general's office) were informed just prior to the execution of the search warrants, in keeping with standard law enforcement procedures."

I'm not sure what the FBI is going to find, but the fact that they are searching Foggo's home and office is not good. This is going beyond the Duke Cunningham scandal of bribery for congressional favors. This is even going beyond the HookerGate scandal, of congressmen and government officials playing poker and cavorting with hookers in the Watergate Hotel. This has become another example of the "culture of corruption" within this Republican Party-controlled government, where legislative and government favors, business deals, and no-bid contracts are traded in such cavalier fashion. It is incredible.

And now it is imploding upon themselves. I wonder what the FBI is going to find in their search?

Friday Fun Stuff: Is this a Grizzly, or a Polar Bear?

In this undated photo provided by the Canadian Wildlife Service, hunter Jim Martell, left, is seen with a hybrid bear he shot while on a hunting expedition on Banks Island, Northwest Territory, Canada. According to Dr. Ian Stirling, researcher for the CWS, genetic tests showed the bear had a polar bear for a mother and a grizzly bear for a father. Roger Kuptana, center, right, was the guide on the expedition. The other men are unidentified. (AP Photo/Canadian Wildlife Service)

This is a fascinating story. I would have never expected the idea of a grizzly bear mating with a polar bear--two different species of bear living in two different environmental habitats in the wild? But, as this story points out, the DNA tests confirm it--we've got a "grizzlar bear." Or is it a polzzly bear?" This is from Yahoo News:

TORONTO - A DNA test has confirmed what zoologists, hunters and aboriginal trackers in the far northern reaches of Canada have dreamed of for years: the first documented case of a grizzly-polar bear in the wild.

Roger Kuptana, an Inuit tracker from the Northwest Territories, suspected the American hunter he was guiding had shot a hybrid bear after noticing its white fur was spotted brown and it had the long claws and slightly humped back of a grizzly.

Territorial officials seized the bear's body and a DNA test from Wildlife Genetics International, a lab in British Columbia, confirmed the hybrid was born of a polar bear mother and grizzly father.

"It's something we've all known was theoretically possible because their habitats overlap a little bit and their breeding seasons overlap a little bit," said Ian Stirling, a biologist with the Canadian Wildlife Service in Edmonton, Alberta. "It's the first time it's known to have happened in the wild."

A combo photo of a polar bear on the edge of the Hudson Bay near the city of Churchill, Manitoba, Canada(L) and a US Fish and Wildlife Service picture of two Grizzly bears. A US hunter in Canada's far north may have killed the first Grizzly-Polar bear cross ever discovered in the wild, officials told AFP.(AFP/HO/File)

He said the first person to realize something was different about the bear — shot and killed last month on the southern end of Banks Island in the Beaufort Sea — was Kuptana, the guide.

"These guides know their animals and they recognized that there were a number of things that didn't look quite right for a polar bear," Stirling told The Associated Press. The bear's eyes were ringed with black, its face was slightly indented, it had a mild hump to its back and long claws.

Stirling said polar bears and grizzlies have been successfully paired in zoos and that their offspring are fertile, but there had been no documented case in the wild.

Colin Adjun, a wildlife officer in Kugluktuk on the northern mainland in western Nunavut, said he's heard stories about an oddly colored bear cavorting with polars.

"It was a light chocolate color along with a couple of polar bears," Adjun said. Though people have talked about the possibility of a mix, "it hasn't happened in our area," he said.

Three years ago, a research team spotted a grizzly on uninhabited Melville Island, 215 miles north of where Martell bagged his crossbreed.

Polar bears and hippos have joined the ranks of species threatened with extinction from climate change, unregulated hunting and other man-made dangers, a leading environmental agency said on Tuesday. (HANDOUT/U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Alaska Image Library/Reuters)

Polar bear and grizzly territories also overlap in the Western Arctic around the Beaufort Sea, where the occasional grizzly is known to head onto the sea ice looking for food after emerging from hibernation. Some grizzly bears make it over the ice all the way to Banks Island and Victoria Island, where they have been spotted and shot.

That might explain how a grizzly got to the region, but few can explain how it managed to get along with a polar bear long enough to mate.

David Paetkau, a geneticist with Wildlife Genetics, said the hybrid bear could be an anomaly. He said that if the two types of bear continue to mate, it would water down the breeds. He also said that scientists worry melting ice caps in the Arctic could soon have a detrimental impact on polar bears, which thrive in an icy environment.

According to the National Wildlife Federation, there are about 1,200 grizzlies in the lower 48 United States, 32,000 in Alaska, and 25,000 in Canada. Stirling said there are some 24,000 polar bears in Canada, Greenland, Russia and Alaska.

US military, intelligence officials raise concern about possible preparations for Iran strike

This is from Raw Story:

Concern is building among the military and the intelligence community that the US may be preparing for a military strike on Iran, as military assets in key positions are approaching readiness, RAW STORY has learned.

According to military and intelligence sources, an air strike on Iran could be doable in June of this year, with military assets in key positions ready to go and a possible plan already on the table.

Speculation has been growing on a possible air strike against Iran. But with the failure of the Bush administration to present a convincing case to the UN Security Council and to secure political backing domestically, some experts say the march toward war with Iran is on pause barring an "immediate need."

"In March/April of this year [the US] was pushing for quick closure, a thirty day window," says a source close to the UN Security Council, describing efforts by the Administration to "shore up enough support" to get a UN Chapter 7 resolution.

A UN Chapter 7 resolution makes it possible for sanctions to be imposed against an uncooperative nation and leaves the door open to military action.

So the Bush administration has been pushing to get both the military and diplomatic ducks in their rows for a possible air strike against Iran. It is interesting that the Bush administration has been pushing to get this UN Chapter 7 resolution passed before April. If the resolution was passed by April, or even by May, this would give the Bush White House a slim legal justification for imposing economic sanctions against Iran for three months or so, before declaring that sanctions were not having a desired affect. This would open the way for the Bush administration to attack Iran before the November midterm elections. Continuing on:

The UN source also says that a military analysis suggests that no military action should be undertaken in Iran until spring of 2007, but that things remain volatile given this administrationÂ’s penchant for having "their own way."

Other military and intelligence sources are expressing concern both privately and publicly that air strikes on Iran could come earlier than believed.

Retired Air Force Colonel and former faculty member at the National War College Sam Gardiner has heard some military suggestions of a possible air campaign in the near future, and although he has no intimate knowledge of such plans, he says recent aircraft carrier activity and current operations on the ground in Iran have raised red flags.

"I would expect two or three aircraft carriers would be moved into the area," Gardner said, describing what he thinks is the best way air strikes could be carried out without disengaging assets from US fronts in Afghanistan and Iraq.

Two air-craft carriers are already en route to the region, RAW STORY has found. The USS Abraham Lincoln, which recently made a port call in Singapore, and the USS Enterprise which left Norfolk, Virginia earlier this month, are headed for the Western Pacific and Middle East. The USS Ronald Reagan is already operating in the Gulf.

In addition to aircraft carrier activity, Gardiner says, B-2 bombers would be critical.

"I would expect the B-2's, the main firepower asset, to be flown on missions directly from the United States," Gardiner explained. "I would expect B-52's to be flown in strikes from the UK and Diego Garcia."

Intelligence sources confirm hearing the allegations of a June attack, but have been unable to fully confirm that such an attack is in the works. Both the New Yorker and the Washington Post have previously reported that the Pentagon is studying military options on Iran.

All sources, however, agree that given the administrationÂ’s interest in regime change, an attack on Iran is likely, regardless of international support or UN backing. Furthermore, all sources agree that Gardiner'’s scenario is the most probable, including an estimated duration and "pause" assessment.

So we've got three nuclear carriers heading towards the Middle East. And now we've got rumors that the Bush administration could attack Iran by June. I was expecting the Bush White House to attack Iran by October, but now with the recent revelations of the NSA database of domestic American phone numbers, and the recent drop in Bush's poll numbers to 29 percent, I fear that President Bush is moving his timetable up a few months. President Bush, Dick Cheney, and even Karl Rove may feel that they have no choice here. Without a sharp increase in their public opinion polls over the next couple of months, the Republicans could be on the verge of losing both houses of Congress. So they might just be pulling the "wartime president" page from their old playbook, and hope that Americans will rally around their president once more in fighting against the evil Iranian terrorists.

This scares me.

Mr. 29 Percent

President Bush makes a statement on the government's intelligence activities at the White House, May 11, 2006. (Jim Young/Reuters)

Both Americablog, and The Daily Kos have posted this story on their sites. The source story is from The Wall Street Journal:

President Bush'’s job-approval rating has fallen to its lowest mark of his presidency, according to a new Harris Interactive poll. Of 1,003 U.S. adults surveyed in a telephone poll, 29% think Mr. Bush is doing an "“excellent or pretty good" job as president, down from 35% in April and significantly lower than 43% in January.

Roughly one-quarter of U.S. adults say "“things in the country are going in the right direction," while 69% say "“things have pretty seriously gotten off on the wrong track."” This trend has declined every month since January, when 33% said the nation was heading in the right direction. Iraq remains a key concern for the general public, as 28% of Americans said they consider Iraq to be one of the top two most important issues the government should address, up from 23% in April. The immigration debate also prompted 16% of Americans to consider it a top issue, down from 19% last month, but still sharply higher from 4% in March.

The Harris poll comes two days after a downbeat assessement of Bush in a New York Times/CBS News poll. The Times, in analyzing the results, said '"Americans have a bleaker view of the country'’s direction than at any time in more than two decades."'”

Please remember, this poll was taken before the USA Today story came out revealing the NSA creation of a database of American phone numbers for domestic spying. So these results do not even take into account the American public's outrage over this latest domestic spying scandal from the Bush administration. You can bet that next week's Gallup, Zogby, ABC News / Washington Post polls will probably also reflect a drop in Bush's approval ratings as a result of this latest scandal.

Mr. 29 Percent.

Inflation worries, oil surge slam stocks

Why am I not surprised at this? From MSNBC News:

NEW YORK - — Anxious investors sent stocks plunging Thursday as surging commodities prices fed fears that the Federal Reserve would extend its two-year streak of interest rate hikes. The major indexes saw their biggest one-day drops since mid-January.

The sharp decline reflected Wall StreetÂ’s deep disappointment with the Federal ReserveÂ’s statement on Wednesday that more rate tightening could be needed to counter inflationary pressures from energy and metals. Investors were hoping for signals that rates have been raised enough to keep inflation in check.

But Thursday, worries about overseas supplies sent crude futures racing past $73 a barrel, and gold prices jumped to a fresh 25-year high. The commodities strength spooked a market looking for clarity on an economy teetering between growth and inflation.

The Dow plunged 141.92, or 1.22 percent, to 11,500.73, its largest slide since falling 213 points on Jan. 19. A day earlier, the Dow came within 75 points of its best-ever close of 11,722.98, reached on Jan. 14, 2000.

Broader stock indicators also fell steeply. The Standard & PoorÂ’s 500 index slid 16.93, or 1.28 percent, to 1,305.92, and the Nasdaq composite index lost 48.04, or 2.07 percent, to 2,272.70.

Interest rate concerns weighed on the dollar and bonds, with the yield on the 10-year Treasury note climbing to 5.16 percent from 5.13 percent late Wednesday. The U.S. dollar pulled back from earlier gains against the Japanese yen and was flat versus European currencies.

It is President Bush's Anti-Great Society Program--destroy the social safety net of the federal government by cutting social programs' budgets, and then give out huge tax breaks to big corporations and rich elites, all while fighting two wars overseas. Oh, and pay for it, not by raising taxes, but by turning on the government's printing presses and just print dollars until the sun doesn't shine. George Bush is following the same playbook as Lyndon Johnson was in providing guns and butter during the 1960s with Vietnam and Johnson's Great Society anti-poverty programs. The only difference here is that Johnson was using the government to try to end poverty and create a social safety net for Americans, while also fighting his war in Vietnam. President Bush is using the federal government to not just destroy the Great Society safety net of President Johnson, but also to create a government-paid safety net for big corporations and rich elites. And Bush has got two wars to fight in Iraq and Afghanistan, with a third war on the way in Iran, to Lyndon Johnson's one war in Vietnam.

However you spin this, it is going to spell disaster for the American economy. Lyndon Johnson turned on the printing presses to pay for his guns and butter. Bush has had the printing presses going full blast for the past five years--and another three years to go for his administration. Inflation is going to kick in soon, with higher prices that will hit businesses, consumers, and investors. Look at what has happened today--inflation worries and energy prices have slammed the Dow down by 141 points, the Nasdaq is down 48 points. Interest rates are rising--and the Feds are signaling that rates could still rise even further. Oil and gas prices can still go up, especially if investors are nervous about an upcoming American attack against Iran. If inflation pressures start forcing prices to rise, American consumers are going to cut back on their spending. The Feds are going to continue raising interest rates as a means to combat inflation, forcing businesses to cut back on investment in new factors of production. We're going to see the worst of both worlds--stagflation, where you could have a deep economic recession in the U.S., and rising prices due to inflation. It happened from the mid-1970s to mid-1980s.

But I fear that this will be much worst than what we've seen in the 70s.

Senate Approves $70 Billion Tax-Cut Bill / House Passes $513B Wartime Defense Bill

It looks like we know where the Republican loyalties lie--with their corporate and rich elites! This is from Yahoo News:

WASHINGTON - The Senate gave final approval Thursday to a $70 billion election-year package of tax cuts that will extend lower rates for investors and also save billions for families with above-average incomes.

The Senate passed the measure by a 54-44 vote, clearing it for President Bush's signature.

The legislation provides a two-year extension of the reduced 15 percent tax rate for capital gains and dividends, currently set to expire at the end of 2008.

It also will extend for one year recent changes to the alternative minimum tax — originally aimed at making sure the wealthy pay at least some taxes — to prevent it from hitting more upper middle-income families.

The bill also will extend for two years provisions sought by small businesses to let them write off up to $100,000 in investments in equipment and other expenses.

The debate followed partisan lines, with Republicans eagerly crediting the tax cuts, first enacted in 2003, with a surging economy, millions of new jobs and booming tax revenues. Democrats overwhelmingly opposed the bill, saying its tax cuts on capital gains and dividends will flow mostly to wealthy.

Just three Republicans — Olympia J. Snowe of Maine, Lincoln Chafee of Rhode Island and George Voinovich of Ohio — voted against the bill. Democrats Ben Nelson of Nebraska, Bill Nelson of Florida and Mark Pryor of Arkansas voted in favor.

Interesting how only three Republicans voted against this bill--both Snow and Chafee are moderate Republicans. And I would imagine that the Democrats who voted for it are conservative Democrats.

But this tax cut isn't all that I want to talk about here. Check out this little story that was also on Yahoo News:

WASHINGTON - The House on Thursday approved a $512.9 billion military bill that addresses a host of concerns arising from wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, from combatting makeshift roadside bombs to equipping more vehicles and troops with armor.

Passed on a 396-31 vote, the measure includes a plan to spend $50 billion for the first part of next year's war costs.

The Senate Armed Services Committee has approved its version of the bill. It also envisions $50 billion for wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. If approved, the measure would push to over $400 billion the cost of the Iraq and Afghan wars and global efforts against terrorism since the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks, according to the Congressional Research Service.

So does this make any sense to you? The House approved a $500 billion dollar military bill, with a plan to spend $50 billion for the first part of next year's war costs, while at the same time, both houses of Congress has approved of a $70 billion tax cut. It is like we're emptying the U.S. Treasury's piggy bank to pay for these tax cuts, while at the same time, charging these wars in Iraq, Afghanistan, and possibly Iran, on the national credit card. I'm getting the impression that we're living through the anti-Great Society years of President Bush--as compared to the Great Society programs of Lyndon Johnson. During the Great Society years, President Lyndon Johnson created a number of federal government programs to fight against anti-poverty, while also holding down taxes, and escalating the Vietnam War. Now we have the anti-Great Society programs of President Bush, where Bush cuts taxes to corporations and rich elites, creates new federal programs for domestic spying and supposedly fighting terrorism, while also starting his own wars in Iraq, Afghanistan, and possibly Iran. Remember what happened when Lyndon Johnson tried to have both his Great Society programs, and the Vietnam War? How about ten years of stagflation during the mid 1970s to 1908s?

When is stagflation going to destroy the Bush administration's economy?

American Marines in Iraq going hungry

I found this through Shakespeare's Sister, and I am completely floored by it.  I knew that our military was facing shortages of body armor, night vision equipment, and armed Humvees--but a shortage of food?

This is from The Providence Journal:

The Iraq war has been the war fought on the cheap _ not enough body armor, not enough armor on vehicles, not enough night vision equipment.

So Nick Andoscia went to Iraq. And hunger soon followed.

"I got a letter," says [his mother] Karen. "And he had called me before that. He said, 'Send lots of tuna.' "

Nick told his mother that he and the men in his unit [the 3rd Battalion of the 3rd Marines] were all about 10 pounds lighter in their first few weeks in Iraq. They were pulling 22-hour patrol shifts. They were getting two meals a day and they were not meals to remember.

"He told me the two meals just weren't cutting it. He said the Iraqi food was usually better. They were going to the Iraqis and basically saying, 'feed me.' "

I honestly don't know what to say about this.  We now have an occupation army in Iraq that is being so cheaply supplied by everything, that they are unable to perform their mission.  You can't effectively fight on an empty stomach, and that is what we're telling these Marines to do.

But it gets worst. How are these Marines coping with this hunger? Continuing with the article:

Karen started packing in that wartime tradition as old as mothers and sons. She packed a lot of the packaged tuna, not the canned.

She happened to mention her hungry son to people she works with at Greenwood Credit Union, where she is a teller and has worked for 30 years.

Pounds and pounds of food started showing up amid the daily business of loans and deposits and withdrawals. Marianne Barao, the branch manager, said it could be done, the credit union could become the place where people help feed hungry Marines who are risking their lives on a skimpy diet.

"We sent out 51 pounds this week," says Karen. "There are customers coming in saying, 'What do you need?' "

The credit union is paying the cost of packing and shipping.

Any packaged food is welcome. So are baby wipes because showers are even rarer than a full meal. And foot powder.

How is it that, within the richest country in the world, American citizens are forced to put out donation baskets to credit unions so they can collect food to send back to American soldiers?  Don't criticize me for saying that what Karen is doing for her son Nick is wrong--I think it is incredible that Karen is helping her son and his fellow marines with this food drive.  But I'm outraged that we have a military that is incapable of feeding its own troops, that our soldiers are now being forced to rely on these canned food drives from ordinary American citizens. I'm outraged that we have a Pentagon willing to hand out billions in no-bid contracts to Haliburton, while Nick Andoscia and his fellow Marines are asking Iraqi citizens for food.  I'm outraged that Karen is forced to make sacrifices so her son Nick can stay alive in Iraq, and hopefully come home, while at the same time our incompetent President and the Republican Congress happily hands out $70 billion in tax cuts to their corporate benefactors and rich elites. How many other American Marines and Army soldiers are also in this same situation, but who don't have family members or loved ones able to send food to Iraq?

I don't know about you, but $70 billion can buy a lot of food and equipment for the troops in Iraq.

Bush Doesn't Confirm NSA Data Collection

Shall we include the latest Bush denials on the illegal NSA spying operation? This is from Yahoo News:

WASHINGTON - President Bush did not confirm or deny a newspaper report Thursday that the National Security Agency was collecting records of tens of millions of ordinary Americans' phone calls.

"Our intelligence activities strictly target al-Qaida and their known affiliates," Bush said. "We're not mining or trolling through the personal lives of millions of innocent Americans."

USA Today, based on anonymous sources it said had direct knowledge of the arrangement, reported that AT&T Corp., Verizon Communications Inc., and BellSouth Corp. began turning over records of Americans' phone calls to the NSA shortly after the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.

Bush said any domestic intelligence-gathering measures he's approved are "lawful," and he says "appropriate" members of Congress have been briefed.

Bush said that U.S. intelligence targets terrorists and that the government does not listen to domestic telephone calls without court approval and that Congress has been briefed on intelligence programs.

He vowed to do everything in his power to fight terror and "we will do so within the laws of our country."

So you can pretty much bet that the NSA is spying on millions of American citizens with this new access of phone numbers. And you can pretty much guess that Karl Rove is looking into the phone records of Howard Dean, Al Gore, Hillary Clinton, John Kerry, and a number of other top Democratic leaders. It is just incredible.

Domestic spying inquiry killed

This is how you kill an investigation into domestic spying. Also from CNN.Com:

WASHINGTON (AP) -- The government has abruptly ended an inquiry into the warrantless eavesdropping program because the National Security Agency refused to grant Justice Department lawyers security clearance.

The Justice Department's Office of Professional Responsibility, or OPR, sent a fax Wednesday to Democratic Rep. Maurice Hinchey of New York saying it was closing its inquiry because without clearance it could not examine department lawyers' role in the program.

"We have been unable to make any meaningful progress in our investigation because OPR has been denied security clearances for access to information about the NSA program," OPR counsel H. Marshall Jarrett wrote to Hinchey. Hinchey's office shared the letter with The Associated Press.

Jarrett wrote that beginning in January his office has made a series of requests for the necessary clearances. Those requests were denied Tuesday.

"Without these clearances, we cannot investigate this matter and therefore have closed our investigation," Jarrett wrote.

Justice Department spokesman Brian Roehrkasse said the terrorist surveillance program "has been subject to extensive oversight both in the executive branch and in Congress from the time of its inception."

Roehrkasse noted the OPR's mission is not to investigate possible wrongdoing in other agencies, but to determine if Justice Department lawyers violated any ethical rules.

Gee--what a great idea! Deny Justice Department lawyers security clearances into the illegal NSA spying program, and PRESTO--the investigation closes down! Excuse me while I throw up.

It is time to kick the Republicans out of both Congress and the White House.

USA Today: NSA building massive database of phone records

Well, the Fourth Amendment has been both shredded, and flushed down the toilet. This is from CNN.Com:

WASHINGTON (AP) -- The government has been secretly collecting records of ordinary Americans' phone calls in an effort to build a database of every call made within the country, it was reported Thursday.

AT&T, Verizon and BellSouth telephone companies began turning over records of tens of millions of their customers' phone calls to the National Security Agency program shortly after the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, said USA Today, citing anonymous sources it said had direct knowledge of the arrangement.

The big phone companies are handing over all records of customers domestic phone calls. They are handing over your landline calls, your cell phone calls--everything to the government. The federal government is domestically spying on you without a search warrant, or probable cause. Continuing on:

The White House defended its overall eavesdropping program and said no domestic surveillance is conducted without court approval.

"The intelligence activities undertaken by the United States government are lawful, necessary and required to protect Americans from terrorist attacks," said Dana Perino, the deputy White House press secretary, who added that appropriate members of Congress have been briefed on intelligence activities.

So why is the government building this database of every phone call made by every American in this country, without a search warrant? Such a database is powerful enough to where it can be abused by those, who may not be interested in fighting terrorism. Can you imagine Karl Rove going over the phone records of Howard Dean? Or perhaps even Rove and Cheney peeking into the phone records of Patrick Fitzgerald? This database is fraught with possible abuse. It is not legal, not necessary, and not required to protect Americans for terror attacks--no matter what the White House says.

Bush Official Offered Abramoff Help

We've got ourselves a great episode of The Jack Abramoff Show! This is off Yahoo News:

WASHINGTON - The Bush administration's top procurement official offered his assistance to now-disgraced lobbyist Jack Abramoff as his lobbying empire began to crumble, according to e-mails released Wednesday by the White House.

"Let me know if there is anything I can do to help with damage control," David Safavian, who is now under indictment, messaged Abramoff on Feb. 22, 2004.

At the time, Safavian was working at the White House Office of Management and Budget. He later became administrator of federal procurement policy at OMB.

That morning, The Washington Post revealed how four of Abramoff's Indian tribal clients had paid $45 million, most of it to Abramoff partner Michael Scanlon.

This is big. So David Safavian was willing to help Abramoff just as Abramoff's lobbying empire was crumbling. The first question here is what was Safavian willing to do to help Abramoff. The second aspect of this story is that Abramoff's Indian tribal clients paid $45 million to Abramoff's partner Michael Scanlon--that's a huge chunk of change here. What was the services that Abramoff and Scanlon gave to these tribal clients for this $45 million. And do both the Safavian email and this payment have a connection?

The Yahoo story has some interesting details here:

A few days before Abramoff's operations were exposed by The Post, Safavian expressed a willingness to put an Abramoff lobbying partner on a government acquisition advisory panel.

But the partner had left Abramoff's lobbying firm, so "I assume that means you have no interest in seeing him named to the panel. Correct?" Safavian asked.

"No, not at all," Abramoff replied. "He has left to give me more flexibility and make sure he has more earning potential. He is still absolutely part of our family. Please put him on if convenient and he wants to do it. Thanks so much David."

Within weeks, Abramoff was ousted by his firm.

The day after he was ousted, Safavian wrote his friend an e-mail asking, "Are you OK? I figured you would be besieged with phone calls. So I thought an e-mail would be best. Just wanted to let you know that you're in our thoughts. Let me know if there is ANYTHING I can do."

In another e-mail to Abramoff after his lobbying practices had come under investigation, Safavian explained that he would have to turn down a last-minute invitation from the lobbyist for lunch, noting that Abramoff had rejected an earlier offer for the two to get together.

"When you spurned my invite, I called one of the industry sycophants and offered him an opportunity to suck up," Safavian wrote.

Late in 2004, Safavian gave Abramoff a heads-up that a provision buried in a lengthy piece of legislation gave the GSA "enormous latitude" in disposing of government property. The provision was of interest to Abramoff because he had been trying to acquire land outside Washington for a private school he had founded.

So it appears that Safavian and Abramoff were planning on placing an Abramoff lobbying partner on a government acquisition advisory panel, just before Abramoff's lobbying empire was exposed. This acquisition panel would have been of interest to Abramoff for acquiring government land for his private school. And yet, an Abramoff lobbyist on this government panel is a sweet option to sell to the Indian tribes. Consider this Yahoo story I talked about in a previous post:

Abramoff was trying to get GSA approval for leases of the Old Post Office Pavilion in Washington for an Indian tribe to develop and for federal property in Silver Spring, Md., for use by a Jewish school.

Is such a positioning of an Abramoff lobbyist on a GSA panel worth $45 million?

What do you think?

Hard-Core Republicans Are Fleeing President

Poll Results are coming fast and furious here. This is from The Washington Post:

Disaffection over spending and immigration have caused conservatives to take flight from President Bush and the Republican Congress at a rapid pace in recent weeks, sending Bush's approval ratings to record lows and presenting a new threat to the GOP's 12-year reign on Capitol Hill, according to White House officials, lawmakers and new polling data.

The Gallup polling organization recorded a 13-percentage-point drop in Republican support for Bush in the past couple weeks. These usually reliable voters are telling pollsters and lawmakers they are fed up with what they see as out-of-control spending by Washington and an abandonment of core conservative principles more generally.

There are also significant pockets of conservatives turning on Bush and Congress over the their failure to tighten immigration laws, restrict gay marriage and to put an end to the Iraq war and the rash of political scandals, according to lawmakers and pollsters.

Bush won two presidential elections by pursuing a political and governing model that was predicated on winning and sustaining the loyal backing of social, economic and foreign policy conservatives. The strategy was based on the belief that conservatives, who are often more politically active than the general public, could be inspired to vote in larger numbers and would serve as a reliable foundation for his presidency. The theory, as explained by Bush strategists, is that the president would enjoy a floor below which his support would never fall.

It is now apparent that this floor has weakened dramatically and collapsed in places.

There is a couple of interesting aspects in this Post story. First, conservatives are angry at the out-of-control spending by both the Bush administration and the Republican Congress. With the Bush administration having already spent almost $4 trillion in five years, conservatives are realizing that the U.S. Treasury is pretty much empty. And with the Feds raising interest rates, the only way to pay for this debt is to either cut the defense spending (and conservatives love a strong defense), or to raise taxes. Social programs have pretty much been cut, but not as much as the Bush neocons would like to eliminate all social programs from the federal government. Second, the corruption scandals and HookerGate have also taken a toll on the Republicans. Conservatives certainly loved to castrate Bill Clinton for having his extra-marital affair, but now that you've got Republican congressmen having poker parties with prostitutes...Well, that is not going to sit well with Middle America. Finally, the conservatives were claiming that Washington was abandoning "core conservative principles," however such principles are defined. Here I would have to wonder if the conservatives who believed in these "core conservative principles" were hard-liners or a part of the Religious Right Wing of the Republican Party. These individuals would certainly focus their attention towards the social issues of the Republican Party--abortion, gay marriage, immigration, intelligent design, racial and minority relations. These are the voters for whom the social issues of "God, Guns, and Gays" work well for the Republican Party. But the Republicans have not been able to capitalize on pushing through a legislative social agenda to satisfy these constituents. They feel that by having elected an evangelist as George Bush in the White House, it is their right to push their theological and social agenda upon the country. And so far after having two hard core conservatives placed upon the Supreme Court by the Bush administration, the Religious Right hasn't seen any more legislative or judicial victories for their agenda. That could also be making them angry at the Republicans.

Interesting poll results here.

Poll: Democrats lead GOP by double digits

Well, this is an interesting story off CNN.Com:

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- A CNN poll released Wednesday may continue the anxiety for the GOP, showing Democrats with a 14-point advantage over Republicans among registered voters asked their preferences in this year's midterm elections.

The poll, conducted for CNN by Opinion Research Corp., found that 52 percent of respondents who were registered voters said they were leaning toward voting for a Democrat, while 38 percent said they were leaning toward a Republican.

Ten percent said they didn't know how they would vote or candidate not from the two major parties.

Among all Americans, the poll found 50 percent leaning toward Democrats, 37 leaning toward the Republicans and 3 percent intending to vote for non-majority candidates. Ten percent had no opinion

The poll, based on telephone interviews with 1,021 adult Americans between Friday and Sunday, had a margin of error of plus or minus 3 percentage points. (View the poll results -- PDF)

Republicans are suffering politically, the poll suggested, because nearly half of the Americans interviewed said they think the country is on the wrong track.

The Democrats have a 14-point advantage over the Republicans among registered voters, when asked their preferences in this year's elections? First I'll say that is a pretty hefty advantage to have with six months left to go in the election. For the past five months, the Bush administration has been slammed with constant scandals, charges of incompetence, and cronyism. And these problems have not let up, but rather, they have increased, with high energy prices, and nuclear tensions with Iran leading the way. If these problems continue to be at the forefront of the media stories, then you can expect the Democrats will continue to maintain their 14-point advantage, or perhaps even expand their advantage, over that of the Republicans.

This is why the Republicans in Congress are sweating bullets. They've pretty much aligned themselves to the Bush administration for the past five years, without providing any congressional oversight against the Bush White House, or developing their own independence from President Bush's policies. Now that Bush's poll numbers have dropped to around 31 percent, the Republicans are worried that the American public will take their anger out against the Bush administration by voting out the Republicans in Congress. It is only now that you're starting to see Republican congressmen balking or even opposing the Bush administration's political policies, when they feel it may politically help them. Consider this little story from The Nation, via Yahoo News:

The Nation -- General Michael Hayden is getting a warm reception from the Senate Intelligence Committee, who gets first dibs on his nomination as
CIA director. But elsewhere on the Hill prominent Republicans are grumbling, led by House Intelligence Chairman Peter Hoekstra and Speaker of the House Dennis Hastert--pretty much the last person you'd expect to bash the Bush Administration. "I don't think a military guy should be head of CIA, frankly," Hastert sais yesterday. From sub-only Roll Call:

Speaker Dennis Hastert (R-Ill.) has come out against the nomination of Air Force Gen. Michael Hayden to head the CIA, calling the ousting of former Rep. Porter Goss (news, bio, voting record) (R-Fla.) from the agency's top post "a power grab" by John Negroponte, the director of national intelligence.

Hastert's opposition to Hayden is not based on any personal reservations about the nominee. Rather, Hastert is concerned that installing a top-ranking military official at the "CIA would give too much influence over the U.S. intelligence community to the
Pentagon."

You may think that this is an important story, but it really isn't. First, in order to become the next CIA director, General Michael Hayden must be confirmed by the Senate. House Speaker Dennis Hastert and House Intelligence Chairman Peter Hoekstra have no responsibilities regarding Hayden's confirmation--they are both serving in the House of Representatives. So they can flap their mouths all they wish regarding General Hayden--it is not going to hurt them politically. But by speaking out against Hayden, both Hastert and Hoekstra can show their constituents back home that they are distancing themselves away from the Bush administration, and hopefully get re-elected in November. However, when legislation comes up that may affect their big-monied corporate and rich elite political doners, you can bet the Republicans will never bite the hand that feeds them. Consider this little Yahoo News story:

WASHINGTON - A bill awarding tax relief to investors and 15 million taxpayers facing the alternative minimum tax passed the House on Wednesday, giving
President Bush and his GOP allies on Capitol Hill a long-sought election year victory.

The bill providing tax cuts worth $70 billion over five years passed by a 244-185 vote. The Senate was expected to clear the bill for Bush's signature Thursday.

The legislation provides a two-year extension of the reduced 15 percent tax rate for capital gains and dividends, currently set to expire at the end of 2008.

The debate divided starkly along partisan lines, with Republicans crediting the tax cuts, first enacted in 2003, with a surging economy, millions of new jobs and booming tax revenues. Democrats countered that the deficit-financed tax cuts are tilted in favor of wealthy investors and that the economic benefits are not as great as advertised.

"Our pro-growth policies have helped the economy create more than 5.2 million jobs since August of 2003," Bush said in a statement. "By extending key capital gains and dividends tax relief, the House has taken an important step to continue to help hardworking Americans and to keep our economy strong and growing."

"Our tax relief sparked this economic growth," said House Speaker Dennis Hastert, R-Ill. "And by extending key provisions of that tax relief, today's legislation adds just another spark to the already booming economy."

So really, this Republican distancing themselves away from the Bush administration is all political CYA--at least until the November elections are over. But is it too late for the Republicans to distance themselves away from the Bush White House? I can't say. This midterm election is going to be nasty, with both political parties attacking each other through negative campaign ads, more scandals exploding, Republicans suppressing the Democratic votes through more dirty tricks, Diebold computer glitches taking place, and who knows what else. The Republicans are down in the polls. Expect the worst slime to come out of the Republican Party as they will do anything to maintain their grip on power in Washington.

House passes tax cut bill

This doesn't surprise me. From MSNBC News:

WASHINGTON - The House Wednesday passed a bill sought by President Bush to deliver tax cuts worth $70 billion to investors and to keep 15 million taxpayers from being hit by the alternative minimum tax

The House passed the measure by a 244-185 vote. The Senate is expected to clear the bill Thursday.

The bill provides a two-year extension of the reduced 15 percent tax rate for capital gains and dividends, currently set to expire at the end of 2008.

It would also extend, for this year, recent changes to the alternative minimum tax — originally aimed at making sure the wealthy pay at least some taxes — to prevent it from hitting more upper middle-income families.

The debate divided starkly along partisan lines, with Republicans crediting the tax cuts, first enacted in 2003, with a surging economy, millions of new jobs and surging tax revenues. Democrats countered that the deficit-financed tax cuts are tilted in favor of wealthy investors and that the economic benefits are not as great as advertised.

So how are we going to pay for these new tax cuts--by turning on the printing presses?

U.S.: China Not Manipulating Currency

This is off Yahoo News:

WASHINGTON - The Bush administration on Wednesday announced it would not brand China as a country that was manipulating its currency to gain unfair trade advantages.

The decision came in spite of growing pressure in Congress to take punitive action to deal with a U.S. trade deficit with China that hit a record $202 billion last year.

Treasury Secretary John Snow did say he was "extremely dissatisfied" with the pace of China's currency reforms.

American manufacturers contend that China has been artificially keeping its currency devalued by as much as 40 percent against the dollar, giving Chinese manufacturers a huge competitive advantage against U.S. products.

However, the administration said in the latest currency report to Congress that it did not believe China technically met the definition in the law of a currency manipulator.

Can you say something smells here? Continuing on:

Critics of China's trade policies were quick to attack the decision.

"By failing to designate China as a manipulator in this report ... the United States comes off as a paper tiger unwilling to stand up for its domestic industrial sector," said Auggie Tantillo, executive director of the American Manufacturing Trade Action Coalition, which represents U.S. textile and clothing companies.

"Secretary Snow has been consistently rolled by the Chinese government in his years-long but unsuccessful effort to get China to take action on its highly undervalued currency," said Kevin Kearns, president of the U.S. Business and Industry Council, which represents many medium and small-sized manufacturing companies.

The report noted that China last July announced it was abandoning a fixed link of the yuan's value to the dollar, although since that time the yuan has risen in value by only about 3 percent.

"We are extremely dissatisfied with the slow and disappointing pace of reform of the Chinese exchange rate regime," Snow said.

"We are not satisfied with the progress made on China's exchange rate regime and we will monitor closely China's progress every step of the way," he said.

The currency report, which the administration must present to Congress every six months, was delayed by a few weeks, until after Chinese President
Hu Jintao and President Bush discussed the currency dispute during a White House meeting on April 20.

First question I have to ask is what was said between the meetings by Chinese President Hu Jintao, and President Bush? By artificially keeping the yuan low, the Chinese are able to sell more products to the United States, thus expanding their own manufacturing capacity, and causing their own economy to grow. Of course, the Chinese have also been getting U.S. dollars from American consumers, of which they've been investing in our growing debt, through the purchase of U.S. Treasury bonds. But this situation of the Chinese exporting cheap manufactured goods into the U.S. can't last forever. With Americans buying more imported goods than exporting goods to the rest of the world, more American dollars are floating in world currency market. The dollar's value is going to have to drop, causing prices for American exported goods to fall. At the same time, the value of the Chinese yuan should rise, causing prices for Chinese imports into the U.S. to rise. But we really haven't seen this happen yet. Prices have started to rise here in the U.S., but I would have to wonder if such increases were a result of the increased oil and energy costs.

I would guess that the Chinese still believe they could continue expanding their economy on the backs of the U.S. consumer. The Chinese believe that the American consumer would continue to purchase whatever goods they sell to the U.S. And the Chinese may be willing to threaten the Bush administration with the Chinese dumping of the dollar, if the U.S. makes demands for the China to revalue the yuan. So far, the Bush administration still believes in old "strong dollar" policy, where the U.S. dollar is the world's de facto currency. Is the Bush administration willing to spark sharp rises in prices on imported goods, perhaps causing inflation to rise within the U.S., and thus creating an economic recession?

But the dollar's value has been dropping. For years, foreign governments have been happily gobbling up U.S. bonds in exchange for selling cheap goods into the U.S. And American consumers have been happily buying up these imported goods with their dollars, sending those dollars overseas. There comes a time when foreign governments have had enough of accumulating dollars, and would be worried that the value of their U.S. investments would drop, if inflation starts to rise in the U.S. A second problem could be the U.S. economy itself. With more American jobs being outsourced, especially white collar and professional class jobs, American consumers may not be willing or able to purchase as much imported goods as they were years before. Foreign producers would be unable to sell their goods in the American market, and thus they would have to cut back on their production. We could see a situation where an American recession could trigger a greater world-wide recession...or perhaps even a depression?

So this story is troubling to me. I get the impression that the Chinese want to keep the status quo going on for now, and the Bush administration is willing to go along with it--both for their own self-centered reasons. And as long as this continues on, a day of reckoning draws closer, where the crap will hit both the Chinese and American fans.

Bush Backs Brother Jeb for White House

President Bush, left, is introduced by his brother, Gov. Jeb Bush, right, R-Fla., before speaking on his Medicare Prescription Drug coverage plan at Kings Point Club House, Tuesday, May 9, 2006 in Sun City Center, Fla. (AP Photo/Pablo Martinez Monsivais)

I just have one thing to say about this--I DON'T want another Bush in the White House! From Yahoo News:

ORLANDO, Fla. - President Bush suggested Wednesday that he'd like to see his family's White House legacy continue, perhaps with his younger brother Jeb as the chief executive.

The president said Florida Gov. Jeb Bush is well-suited for another office and would make "a great president."

"I would like to see Jeb run at some point in time, but I have no idea if that's his intention or not," Bush said in an interview with Florida reporters, according to an account on the St. Petersburg Times Web site.

The president said he had "pushed him fairly hard about what he intends to do," but Jeb has not said.

"I have no idea what he's going to do. I've asked him that question myself. I truly don't think he knows," Bush said.

Jeb Bush, 53, will end his second term as governor in January. His brother George ends his second presidential term in January 2009. Neither can seek re-election because of term limits.

Jeb Bush has repeatedly said he is not going to run in 2008.

I've seen how much of a disaster our current President Bush has made of this country--Katrina, the jobless economic recovery, the class warfare being waged between the rich elites and the rest of America, the $8 trillion debt, the disastrous Iraq war, the illegal domestic spying, the extreme anti-American views exploding throughout the entire world, the corporate cronyism permeated throughout the Bush White House, and the complete destruction of both the Constitution and the Bill of Rights for a new fascist government controlled by the Bush White House. This country will not survive another Bush presidency.

And yet, I can certainly see where the current President Bush and the PNAC neocons are heading with this story. The PNAC neocons need to maintain their control of the White House in 2008, to continue their process of converting the presidency into a dictatorship--also known as a "unitary executive." They need a neoconservative in the White House for the 2008 and perhaps even 2012 to continue their program of making the United States into both an imperial power, and to destroy the last of the New Deal / Great Society programs that benefit ordinary Americans, allowing corporations and rich elites to continue to maintain complete control of all levers of power in government, business, and society. Jeb Bush is one of the founders of the Project for a New American Century. He is also one of the front runners for the Republican presidential primary in 2008. It is no wonder that President Bush is pressuring his younger brother Jeb to run for the presidency in 2008.

Bush: Iran letter doesn't answer nuclear question

This is off Yahoo News:

ORLANDO, Florida (Reuters) - President George W. Bush said on Wednesday that a letter from Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad this week did not answer the key question of when Tehran would abandon its nuclear program.

"It looks like it did not answer the main question that the world is asking and that is, 'When will you get rid of your nuclear program?'," Bush said in his first public comment on the letter.

Bush was speaking in an interview with Florida newspapers that was posted on the St. Petersburg Times Web site.

"Britain, France, Germany - coupled with the United States and Russia and China have all agreed that the Iranians should not have a weapon or the capacity to make a weapon," Bush said. "There is a universal agreement toward that goal and the letter didn't address that question," he said.

Ahmadinejad's 18-page letter was the first publicly announced communication from an Iranian president to a U.S. president since the break between the two countries in 1979 after Iran's revolution.

It discussed alleged American foreign policy misdeeds and defended scientific research as a basic right of nations.

Bush you frickin twit--it doesn't matter whether Ahmadinejad answered or addressed the nuclear question in his letter. The main point here is that he directly sent you a letter, opening a possible dialog with the United States to resolve the issues and disputes between the U.S. and Iran. The issues within that letter were the issues that Ahmadinejad wanted to address--of course Ahmadinejad doesn't want to address the issues of Iran's nuclear program, any more than you don't want to address the issues of secret East European prisons, illegal domestic spying, or the use of torture on Muslim prisoners. With this letter, you had an opening to where you could have had a U.S. diplomat sit down across from the table of an Iranian diplomat, and they both start talking about all the issues and disputes between both countries. That is what diplomacy is all about.

Of course, such diplomatic negotiations would screw up your military timetable for attacking Iran....

Iranians Fault Rice's Dismissal of Letter

This is off Yahoo News:

TEHRAN, Iran - Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice's abrupt dismissal of a letter from Iran's president might only strengthen hardline attitudes and mistrust of America, some Iranians warned Tuesday.

As President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad began a high-profile visit to a key Muslim country, Indonesia, a former top Iranian official said Rice's response will give new justification to those who oppose ties with the U.S.

Iran's former ambassador to France, Sadeq Kharrazi, said the letter — the first from an Iranian head of state to an American president in 27 years — "could have been a turning point in relations." But he said Rice squandered the opportunity with what he called a "hasty reaction."

"This gives a pretext to those in Iran who oppose re-establishment of ties with America," he said.

Ahmadinejad's 18-page letter to President Bush touched only indirectly on the hottest dispute between the two countries — Iran's nuclear program. Instead, it focuses on a long list of grievances against the United States and seeks to build on a shared faith in God to resolve them.

Rice told The Associated Press the letter "isn't addressing the issues that we're dealing with in a concrete way."

What can I say? The Bush administration completely blew it! This is the first letter from an Iranian head of state to an American president in 27 years--the Iranians were making an overture towards opening direct negotiations with the United States! This was a huge concession from Iran. It opens direct talks between U.S. and Iranian officials. Granted, there was enough rhetoric and a list of grievances the Iranians had against the U.S. in the letter, and that the Iranians conveniently never mentioned their own nuclear program. But the important fact was that the Iranians were willing to sit down in direct negotiations with the U.S. towards ending these disputes. In other words, this was a diplomatic opening towards normalizing relations between the United States and Iran.

And President Bush screwed up! Secretary of State Condi Rice's dismissal of this letter tells me that the Bush neocons have no intention resolving this Iranian nuclear dispute in a diplomatic or political way--the PNAC neocons would never allow diplomatic negotiations to interfere with their dream of American imperialism in the Middle East. The Bush administration has set their own deadline against Iran for ending their nuclear program, or the U.S. will attack Iran. This deadline will be around the middle or end of October, before the midterm elections in which the Republicans are hoping that a U.S. attack against Iran will cause Americans to "rally around the flag and their president," and thus ensuring that Americans will vote to maintain Republican control of Congress. Any direct negotiations between the U.S. and Iran, six months before the midterm elections, will negate this White House political deadline for an American attack against Iran, considering that direct negotiations between the U.S. and Iran could take at least a year or longer to resolve these disputes.

But there is more. Consider this from the story:

Iranian political analyst Saeed Leilaz said Rice's quick brushoff would fuel anti-American feelings in Iran.

"It could have been the beginning of a new process," he said. Rice's response "strengthens the suspicion (inside Iran) that the U.S. is thinking of a military option only and not a political solution" to the standoff over Iran's nuclear program, he said.

That is the real problem here. The Bush administration's dismissal of this letter will only harden extremist views in both Washington and Tehran. This brush-off simply reinforces Iranian's beliefs that the U.S. will attack Iran, and it will only fuel the anti-American hatred of hard-lined extremists in Iran if the U.S. does attack. The Bush administration's attitude also tells the Iranian government that the U.S. is not interested in talking with Iran, and Iran is not going to make any more concessions to the U.S. The Iranians will go to war with the United States if the U.S. does attack Iran. The Bush administration's dismissal of this letter also hardens extremist views in Washington. The PNAC neocons in the Bush administration looked at this letter, saw that it listed Iranian grievances against the U.S., and felt that a state-sponsored terrorist nation in the Middle East has no right to kick an imperial superpower of the United States around. Got to teach those Iranians a lesson now! The Iranians certainly have a list of demands to present to the United States--just as the U.S. has a list of demands to present to the Iranians. The key here is that the Iranians were providing an opening for negotiations in resolving the problems between the U.S. and Iran. The PNAC neocons of Cheney, Rumsfeld, and even Rice probably knew that this letter would have thrown the Bush administration's planned attack against Iran in the trash. That is why Condi Rice dismissed this letter.

You can expect the United States to go to war with Iran in mid-October.

Gold Prices Hit $700 an Ounce

This is off Yahoo News:

NEW YORK - Gold prices surged to a new quarter-century high of $700 an ounce Tuesday as funds bought into the market, driven by tension between the United States and Iran and expectations of a pause in interest rate hikes.

Iran's president wrote in a letter to President Bush that democracy had failed worldwide and lamented "an ever-increasing global hatred" of the U.S. government. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice rejected the letter Tuesday, saying it didn't resolve questions about the country's nuclear program.

Analysts at TheBullionDesk.com said Washington's dismissal of Iran's letter gave way to the gold rally, noting that it appears that tension with Iran will likely rise again, and also that the dollar will stay under pressure. A weakening dollar typically encourages investors to instead turn to gold, considered a safer alternative to the U.S. currency.

June gold futures on the New York Mercantile Exchange rose to $700 an ounce in late-morning trading, a level not seen since late 1980. That's up more than $20 from Monday's closing price of $679.90.

Nymex platinum also hit a fresh record of $1,240 an ounce.

"It's all fund buying," said Leonard Kaplan, president of Prospector Asset Management, about the gains. He added, "the market still believes the Fed is going to pause, and they spin every bit of news that the Fed is going to pause."

Other bullish factors that also appear to be causing gold to rise include high oil prices and concerns that Bolivia's nationalization of the energy market there could spill over into the mining industry, said George Gero of RBC Capital Markets Global Futures.

Gold appears poised to rise still higher, said Kaplan. "There's nothing to stop it," he said. "Nobody is going to short it here."

Gold broke through the $600-an-ounce level for the first time in over 25 years on April 6. Many analysts say it could surpass its all-time record of more than $800 an ounce, reached in early 1980.

I would say that investors are getting scared now. The uncertainties within the news--the US-Iran crisis, the Bolivian nationalization of the energy market, the Iraq war, and continued inflation fears with rising energy prices--all are contributing to a state of nervous watching of the market. There is a fear that any of these troubled spots erupt into a full-blown crisis, we could see energy prices, and gold prices shoot up through the roof, perhaps sparking inflation in the U.S. So investors are hedging their bets by adding gold to their portfolios as an insurance policy against rising inflation.

And gold may still rise even further. The problem is that these troubled hot spots have not been diffused. There is no resolution to any of these crisis--in fact, the US-Iran nuclear crisis could result in a U.S. attack against Iranian nuclear facilities as a political means to improve both the Republicans and President Bush's poll numbers before the November elections. As these hot spots continue to smolder, the danger of their exploding into a crisis will also grow, causing an increase in both energy prices and inflation. It is only a matter of time.

Sources: CIA's No. 3 official to quit

Kyle "Dusty" Foggo directs the CIA's day-to-day operations. From CNN

This is off CNN.Com:

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- The third-highest official at the CIA, under investigation over ties to a defense contractor linked to a Capitol Hill bribery inquiry, has decided to step down, intelligence sources told CNN Monday.

Kyle "Dusty" Foggo was plucked from relative obscurity by CIA Director Porter Goss to become the CIA's executive director, the agency's No. 3 position. As such, Foggo was in charge of day-to-day operations at the spy agency.

Goss announced his resignation Friday after what intelligence sources described as a power struggle with National Intelligence Director John Negroponte.

Intelligence officials said Foggo's departure would be "pretty standard" because the executive director "tends to follow the CIA director's career trajectory."

I like how intelligence officials are now saying that Foggo's departure is standard, considering that CIA Director Porter Goss decided to leave the CIA last Friday.

But there is more here to this story than we've been told. First, we still don't know why CIA Director Goss decided to quit last Friday. The Bush White House never gave an explanation as to Goss' resignation. It is only now that we start to learn about the connection between Goss' number three man Foggo, and the Duke Cunningham bribery scandal. Consider this from the CNN story:

Foggo is being investigated by both the FBI and the CIA's inspector general over ties to a defense contractor linked to the bribery case against former U.S. Rep. Randy "Duke" Cunningham of California.

The investigations stem from Foggo's relationship with defense contractor Brent Wilkes. The two men have reportedly been friends since childhood.

The CIA's inspector general is now looking at a contract Wilkes had with the CIA, awarded by Foggo, to see if there was anything improper in the deal.

The contract, valued at $2.4 million, was for providing water and household items to CIA agents operating in war zones such as Afghanistan and Iraq.

In addition, federal law enforcement sources told CNN the investigation continues into "outstanding issues" in the Cunningham bribery case, and that Foggo is part of those issues.

After media reports surfaced last week alleging Wilkes provided Cunningham with limousines and prostitutes at two Washington hotels, Foggo said he had attended poker parties thrown by Wilkes at the hotels.

So Foggo was childhood friends with Wilkes, who was bribing Duke Cunningham with cash and poker parties with prostitutes, in exchange for exclusive defense contracts from the congressman. And not only did Foggo partake in some of these Wilkes-sponsored parties, but Foggo also awarded CIA contracts to Wilkes. What did Foggo get in return from Wilkes for approving this contract? This is a direct connection between the Republican corruption scandal and the CIA, leading straight up to Goss via Foggo. What did Goss know of this corruption scandal, or the possible CIA contracts to Wilkes' business, or even to Shirlington Limousines, whose CEO Chris Baker procured prostitutes, and delivered them to these parties. And don't forget, the Department of Homeland Security awarded a $21 million contract to Shirlington Limousines to provide shuttle services--even though Baker is a convicted felon.

Is it no wonder that the Bush administration was anxious to get rid of Porter Goss?

Bush approval rating hits new low

This is off USA Today:

WASHINGTON — President Bush's approval rating has slumped to 31% in a new USA TODAY/Gallup Poll, the lowest of his presidency and a warning sign for Republicans in the November elections.

The survey of 1,013 adults, taken Friday through Sunday, shows Bush's standing down by 3 percentage points in a single week. His disapproval rating also reached a record: 65%. The margin of error is +/- 3 percentage points.

"It is a challenging political environment," acknowledges Tracey Schmitt, a spokeswoman for the Republican National Committee, "but we are confident that ultimately voters in November will recognize that a Democrat Congress would simply not be equipped to ensure either economic or national security for our nation."

Got to love the comedic humor of RNC spokeswoman Tracey Schmitt. Bush is now down to 31 percent popularity, and Schmitt is saying that the Americans will realize that a Democratic Congress will be bad for the country?

Is it me, or am I starting to see pink elephants dancing around my head?

Continuing on with the story:

Bush's fall is being fueled by erosion among support from conservatives and Republicans. In the poll, 52% of conservatives and 68% of Republicans approved of the job he is doing. Both are record lows among those groups.

Moderates gave him an approval rating of 28%, liberals of 7%.

"You hear people say he has a hard core that will never desert him, and that has been the case for most of the administration," says Charles Franklin, a political scientist at the University of Wisconsin who studies presidential approval ratings. "But for the last few months, we started to see that hard core seriously erode in support."

All together now--The Republicans are deserting George Bush! The Bush White House has been slammed with scandals, incompetence, corruption, war fatigue, illegal spying, Katrina, high gas prices, stagnating wages--you name it, it is there. People are waking up to the fact that this country is on the wrong track, and that we have a president so intent on "staying the course," rather than adapting to new policies and solutions that he may not politically, or ideologically agree with. The moderates are deserting him--at 28 percent approval ratings. And now the conservatives are deserting him, with a 3-point drop in a single week. What is more, the hard core conservatives may not drop President Bush or the Republicans at the polls in November--they just might not show up at the polls in the first place.

More to come.

Gov. Bush Doubts Harris Can Win Fla. Seat

Rep. Katherine Harris, R-Sarasota, speaks with the media after filing papers to run for her Senate campaign on Monday May 8, 2006 in Tallahassee, Fla. (AP Photo/Steve Cannon)

Talk about the Republicans dumping on poor Katherine Harris. This is from Yahoo News:

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - Gov. Jeb Bush said Monday that U.S. Rep. Katherine Harris (news, bio, voting record) has dropped so low in public opinion polls she cannot beat Democratic U.S. Sen. Bill Nelson (news, bio, voting record) in November.

"I just don't think she can win," Bush said at the Capitol in his strongest statement yet about his fellow Republican's struggling campaign.

The governor has made no secret that he hopes House Speaker Allan Bense will challenge Harris for the Republican nomination. Bense has not made up his mind, his wife, Tonie, said Monday from their Panama City home. The deadline for entering September's primary is Friday.

"With all due respect to the governor ... we know we can win," Harris told reporters Monday after filing her qualifying papers.

Harris has been dogged by staff turnover and her acceptance of $32,000 in illegal campaign contributions from defense contractor Mitchell Wade, who pleaded guilty to bribing former U.S. Rep. Randy "Duke" Cunningham, R-Calif.

Bush also noted that polls show Harris running about 30 points behind Nelson.

Harris rose to national prominence as Florida's secretary of state during the contentious presidential election recount in 2000, the election that resulted in the governor's brother winning Florida by only 537 votes and the presidency. She has been unable to shake that divisive image dispute during two terms in Congress.

I'm not sure I know what else I can say about this. I'm sure that Harris ran a sloppy campaign, considering her acceptance of illegal campaign contributions, and her problems with staff turnover. But Harris was also a controversial figure. She was deeply involved in both the designing of Florida's "butterfly ballot" which caused confusion among voters, and in the Florida 2000 recount challenges which gave George Bush the White House. She is a Republican partisan, and that is her greatest weakness. She may have felt that her work in giving Florida to George Bush in 2000, would allow her to receive complete Republican support for her own campaign in the Florida senate race.

Only the Republicans are deserting her now. Even the president's brother, Florida governor Jeb Bush, wants another Republican, House Speaker Allan Bense, to challenge Harris in the Florida primary. It is amazing at how quickly they are deserting Harris, and even telling Harris to drop out of the race in not too subtle ways--Jeb Bush says, "I just don't think she can win." How much more subtle can that statement be?

I doubt that Harris will drop out. I would say there is too much hubris inside of her--perhaps even some defiance at the Republican political establishment. This is a lady who is willing to gamble her $10 million inheritance to win this senate seat. This is a woman who probably felt that she gave George Bush the White House, and now she wants the Republicans to give her complete support for this senate seat. In other words, this senate seat is Harris' just rewards for working in the Republican establishment. Only she is so blind in her pride, hubris, and perhaps even her own anger at the Republican Party leadership, that she cannot see how everyone is deserting her. But, the longer Harris stays in the race, the better the chance that Bill Nelson will keep his senate seat for the Democrats.

Former Aide to Rep. Ney Pleads Guilty

Neil Volz leaves Federal Court in Washington Monday, May 8, 2006. Volz, a former congressional aide and business associate of convicted lobbyist Jack Abramoff has agreed to plead guilty to charges in connection with the investigation of influence-peddling and public corruption. (AP Photo/Gerald Herbert)

Folks, it is time for another exciting episode of The Jack Abramoff Show! This is off Yahoo News:

WASHINGTON - A former top aide to Rep. Bob Ney (news, bio, voting record), R-Ohio, pleaded guilty Monday in the Jack Abramoff influence peddling scandal, admitting he conspired to corrupt Ney, his staff and other members of Congress with trips, free tickets, meals, jobs for relatives and fundraising events.

The criminal investigation of Abramoff's lobbying operation has now claimed Abramoff and three former congressional staffers: Neil Volz on Monday, as well as Tony Rudy and Michael Scanlon, who both worked for former House Majority Leader
Tom DeLay, R-Texas.

All four are now government witnesses whose prison terms may depend in part on how cooperative they are with federal prosecutors in the investigation involving lawmakers, their aides and members of the Bush administration.

Three former congressional staffers have pleaded guilty on corruption charges--Rudy and Scanlon who worked in Tom DeLay's office, and now Rep. Bob Ney's top aid, Neil Volz, has been ensnared in the Abramoff probe. And Volz admitted he conspired to corrupt Bob Ney--you have to wonder what did Volz give to Ney and his staff, for Ney's support in legislation benefiting Abramoff and his clients?

The details are interesting:

In a nine-page document that focused on Ney's conduct, Volz enumerated 16 actions he said his old boss took on behalf of Abramoff clients. During the period, from January 2000 through April 2004, Volz said Abramoff and his lobbyists gave Ney and members of his staff trips to Lake George in New York state, New Orleans, the Fiesta Bowl in Tempe, Ariz., in 2003, and a weeklong golfing retreat to the Old Course at St. Andrews in Scotland, with a second leg to London.

In addition, Volz wrote, Abramoff gave the congressman and his staff numerous tickets to concerts and sporting events in the Washington, D.C., area; regular meals and drinks at restaurants including Abramoff's restaurant Signatures, and unreported use of Abramoff's box suites at the MCI Center Arena in Washington and Camden Yards Stadium in Baltimore for political fundraisers for Ney and for candidates and political organizations he supported.

And look at what Ney did for Abramoff:

The court papers did not detail the conduct of other congressmen, but it said that Ney, acting with Volz and others, agreed to:

_Sponsor legislation to lift a ban against commercial gambling by the Tigua Indian tribe, an Abramoff client in Texas.

_Sign a letter opposing creation of a commission to study Indian gambling.

_Assist Abramoff in obtaining government property for Abramoff's private school in Maryland.

The court papers also say that after asking Volz what Abramoff wanted the congressman to say, Ney assured the Tiguas in Texas that Abramoff was effectively representing them and that Ney would continue to press for legislation on their behalf.

In a 2003 meeting to assist Abramoff clients, Ney told Housing Secretary Mel Martinez that one of Ney's priorities would be housing for American Indians.

Among the projects on which Volz worked was securing a contract for Foxcom Wireless, an Israeli communications company, to improve cell phone reception in House office buildings.

In a conference phone call with reporters, Ney's lawyers acknowledged that the congressman met with Abramoff about a wireless contract for the House buildings. The lawyers added that Ney, then chairman of the House Administration Committee, also met with Haley Barbour, now the governor of Mississippi, who was lobbying for a competing firm at the time. Ney has said he would have been within his rights to award the contract on his own, but instead held an open competition and awarded it based on merit to the firm represented by Abramoff, Foxcom Wireless.

Sounds like corruption to me.

Nominee for CIA Chief Hayden Faces a Fight

This is also off Yahoo News:

WASHINGTON - President Bush's nomination of Gen. Michael Hayden as
CIA chief ignited a confirmation fight Monday over the intelligence veteran's ties to the controversial eavesdropping program and his ability to be independent from the military establishment.

With Hayden at his side, Bush urged senators to promptly approve the former National Security Agency head, who one year ago was confirmed unanimously to be the nation's first deputy director of national intelligence.

"Mike Hayden is supremely qualified for this position," Bush said in the Oval Office. "He knows the intelligence community from the ground up."

So President Bush considers General Hayden to be qualified to run the CIA. Interesting that Bush choose a military man to become the civilian director of the nation's top civilian spy agency. But Hayden's qualified. Consider this:

Hayden is credited with designing the NSA's warrantless surveillance program. Disclosure of the program late last year sparked an intense civil-liberties debate over whether the president can order the monitoring of international calls and e-mails in the U.S. without court warrants.

Hayden, 61, would be the seventh military officer to head the CIA since 1946. But his nomination comes at a time when lawmakers are particularly concerned about the influence of Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld.

With Hayden's installation, active duty or retired military officers would run all the major spy agencies as well as the intelligence hub, the National Counterterrorism Center.

So lets see....Hayden would come over to the CIA, after setting up the NSA's illegal domestic spying program on American citizens. He's an active duty military man, who would join all the other active and retired military men currently running all of the nation's spy agencies. And I would wonder if Hayden's close to Defense Secretary Rumsfeld.

Can we say the CIA, under General Hayden, will embark on their own domestic spying program against American citizens?
