Lieberman: The tide has turned in Iraq

You have to love Joe Lieberman. The more he plays lapdog to President George W. Bush in supporting Bush's failed war in Iraq, the more insane he appears. I found this yesterday off Think Progress, with the original source story coming from MyRecordJournal.com:

WALLINGFORD -- Speaking before an audience of 350 Brad Davis listeners Monday at Zandri's Stillwood Inn, Sen. Joseph I. Lieberman felt right at home.

The mostly white-haired crowd met the independent Democrat's remarks with warm applause, particularly when he spoke on combating illegal immigration and furthering the war on Islamic terrorism.

"I'm proud to say that the tide has turned in Iraq and we're winning that war," Lieberman said. "And if we don't let down our troops, they're going to bring home a victory that will protect us here at home from today's threat -- totalitarian terrorist Islamism that's trying to take our liberty from us."

Joe Lieberman says the tide has turned in Iraq and we're winning that war. Does anyone believe Joe Lieberman anymore? Because apparently Joe Lieberman has been consistently wrong in his predictions regarding the U.S. winning the war in Iraq. According to ThinkProgress:

Lieberman’s prediction is the latest in a line of premature declarations of victory. Throughout the war, he has repeatedly called for staying the course, claiming that we are “winning” the war:

– “Overall, I would say what I see here today is progress, significant progress from the last time I was here in December. And if you can see progress in war that means you’re headed in the right direction.” [5/30/07]

– “The last two weeks…may be seen as a turning point.” [12/17/05]

– “Does America have a good plan for doing this, a strategy for victory in Iraq? Yes we do.” [11/29/05]

– “We have to stay the course in Iraq now. … If we do that, we will…have won a victory in the war on terrorism.” [1/4/04]

In a sense, I'll have to agree with Joe Lieberman on this one--the tide has turned, and we are winning the war in Iraq. Of course, the tide hasn't turned on the battlefields in Iraq, or with the ethnic violence in Iraq, or even with the exhausted, overstretched U.S. military's inability to stop the violence that is taking place in Iraq. We're losing that war. But what Lieberman may not realize is that the Bush administration is winning their PR war in continuing this disastrous war in Iraq, and Joe Lieberman is happily contributing to that Bush PR game. Let's face it--the Democratic Congress has no spine in opposing Bush. The Democrats have caved to Bush in the war funding, the illegal domestic spying programs, and now the Mukasey nomination--even with Mukasey not saying whether waterboarding is torture or not. It is all about keeping President Bush's failed legacy alive through keeping the war going until after Bush leaves office. And Lieberman is going along with it.

Of course, I suspect that we'll be winning the war in Iraq until January 20, 2009. Once President Hillary takes the oath of office, I think we're going to see Joe Lieberman make a dramatic reversal in predicting that we're nowlosing the war in Iraq.

I'm just wondering if anyone is going to bother listening to Joe Lieberman's predictions.
