Bush Says He Might Consider Newcomers for High Court

From the New York Times:

WASHINGTON, July 13 - President Bush said today that his nominee for the Supreme Court may be someone who has never sat on the bench before.

"Would I be willing to consider people who had never been a judge?" Mr. Bush said. "And the answer is, 'You bet.' "

Mr. Bush said he had had "a very good meeting" on Tuesday with Senate leaders of both parties, who had encouraged him to look beyond the federal judiciary for candidates to replace the retiring Justice Sandra Day O'Connor.

"We're considering all kind of people," Mr. Bush said after a Cabinet meeting today. "Judges, non-judges. Laura gave me some good advice yesterday, which is to consider women. Which, of course I'm doing." First Lady Laura Bush said she would be pleased if the president nominated a woman to fill Justice O'Connor's seat.

Can anyone say Alberto Gonzales?

I LOVE IT!!

Karl Rove for the Supreme Court! Hey, it gets Rove out of the Bush White House. President Bush can say he "fired" Rove for his leaking Valerie Plame's name all over the press. But then, for all the years of devoted service Rove has given to Bush, the president "rewards" Rove with a Supreme Court job. It is a perfect position for Rove. A Supreme Court judge certainly doesn't need a government security clearence. There's really no news leaks or press coverage on the court--except when the court hands down decisions or a justice retires (Rove's experience in press relations and news leaks could be a positive aspect in the Court's PR Department). And Bush can tout that he was the first president to appoint a college dropout to the Supreme Court.
